MMc406 – Critical review - W-Motors Car Ad Campaign and Development

Introduction - As for my open brief critical review assignment I have decided to create my own brief because I would like to have it focused in a field I'm interested in doing. I would like to design this car concept with the emerging technologies for cars such as fuel efficiency, green issues, production techniques but strong performance and so on.

Project Proposal Approval Form
The project proposal is usually developed and written by students to set out what they intend to do as part of their independent study.

Below is the project approval form, you will need to complete add this additional information to each section of this form. Once you have completed the written part you will need to have your project signed by staff.
  1. Project Title –  W-Motors Ad Campaign and Development

  1. Summary of the project – 100 words approx. - I will be making a ad campaign for a car created by W-motors, this car is yet to be announced and will be a concept car for the company which will be a newer model of the Lykan Hypersport. I will be making all multimedia and commercial designs for the car in question, the ad campaign will comprise of various media such as Poster’s, Flyer's, concept art and more. The research will consist of cost, production, technology behind the car and overall look of the car. This car will be instead a Supersport because the last one was a Hypersport.

  1. Write about the challenges you hope to address – 100 words approx. I am hoping to address the challenges of fitting certain technology onto a car of this caliber, without reduction in its overall look or speed that it can achieve, by selectively choosing materials of a light weight for the production its possible to keep it fast but not as fast as its predecessor the Lykan Hypersport because of the sub category difference. This car unlike the previous will be for the consumer and will be created on a large scale production line and will have over a thousand units instead of only 7 in the world like the previous model.

  1. Write about the learning Objectives you hope to achieve by completing this project – 100 words approx. My personal learning objects are to find out in research various technologies and looking into other concept cars and their technologies but make it more future proof on a real scale for my own concept car. I will be using various programs to create the advertising media such as Photoshop, Dreamweaver,  Illustrator and After Effects if i do any video production work and 3DS max to design and develop the car in 3D space to be then used in the advertising once it has been rendered. I will use is V-ray and plan to make it look real as possible.

  1. Motivation – 100 words approx.
The problem is interesting because it involves a Supersport car. The technology that can be used to make it still look great as well as have it equipped with the latest emerging technology for cars to not only make it more road versatile but also unique. This will also give other company's to implement the similar technology into their own cars. my motivation to do this is that I am really fond of these cars, I just love the shape and look of Super cars and after seeing this car in the Fast and furious I have to make it.

  1. Project Plan / Schedule
Concrete description of what you plan to do. Your research plan must include clear milestones for every week until the project due date.

Complete a description of what you plan to do for the following dates:

23/04/15 - Continue into technologies that can be in cars and a look into other concept cars and how they are rendered. Start creating mock ups of the advertising flyer's and posters I.E Wireframes, Moodboards, Draw up some sketches of the car and planning of the car. Find out emerging technologies that I can implement into the car without flawing its overall design and look.

30/04/15 - Start modelling the car alongside doing the course that will teach new Vray techniques and materialization in 3DS max.

07/05/15 - While modelling the car, I will be creating the interior based  advertisements of the car to show the technology inside, these will be created using Photoshop and illustrator as the cars interior will not be modeled due to the time limitation.

07/05/15 -  I will be designing the website for the car, the website will be used to advertise the new car and features, along side is to continue modelling the car and doing the materialization course.

14/05/15 - Code the website to make it live and working, and also  make the finalization t the car model and have it prepped for materialization in 3DS max.

28/05/15 - Materialize the car have the shots of it rendered out to be used in the flyer's, posters and website. if time is available also incorporate it into a video advertisement for TV.

Research
W-motors is a the first Dubai based car company, it only currently created one car the Lykan Hypersport, the car only had 7 created and sold to buyers for 2.4 million each and none have been made since. On the website they have announced super sport car, that has no images of the car as its in development and no name for it either.

Technologies - not all of these will be used in the car

Holographic Interface - Holographic interface for the cars interior use, such as the image below.

Voice Recognition - Voice recognition to make phone calls if needed on speech input the car picks up and will make a call without having you to take your hands off the wheel.

Sensors for Parking -

Self Parallel Parking -

Materials that can be used to make a car chassis - Aluminium, Carbon Fibre, Copper, Steel. any of these materials can be used but the weight of the car and the cost of the material will have to be taken into account. For the car I am making I will need to make the materials light but also affordable.

Energy Generating Technology
Solar Panels on roof to charge the cars electronics -

Self repairing Tires ( Self-Healing Polymer ) in case of  a puncture

Sound Piezo Technology - The piezoelectric properties of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods to harvest energy from vibration and movement. So in essence the background noise or vibrations will initiate the generation of power, but if this technology will be in the car the sound of engine and vibrations of internals of the car will excite the piezoelectric material a lot more, and so generate more power.

The piezeo fibres or crystals provide energy by generating a small voltage whenever they are mechanically deformed. By having these in the pedals of the car also they can give the fibres deformation they need to generate power also.

Even at a stand still as the car is at a junction of example it will still be vibrating and thus still be generating electricity for itself. - http://www.theengineer.co.uk/news/piezo-device-harvests-energy-from-sound/1019140.article

Pyroelectric Technology - The pyroelectric effect converts a temperature change into electric current or voltage. It is analogous to the piezoelectric effect, which is another type of ferroelectric behaviour. Pyroelectricity requires time-varying inputs and suffers from small power outputs in energy harvesting applications due to its low operating frequencies.
However, one key advantage of pyroelectrics overthermoelectrics is that many pyroelectric materials are stable up to 1200 ⁰C or higher, enabling energy harvesting from high temperature sources and thus increasing thermodynamic efficiency. So by having this technology to be able to collect the heat from the engine it will be able to gain energy from it.

Aerodynamics and Aeroelastic Flutter Technology - By using technology otherwise known as wind belts, they will vibrate as the air passes through them and will gain energy from this push and pull of the wind. I could fit some wind belts onto the spoiler and sides of the car that wouldn't be too big but the right size to capture adequate air to reuse its energy into the car.

New Fuel Source created by Audia
'Using carbon dioxide as a raw material represents an opportunity not just for the automotive industry in Germany, but also to transfer the principle to other sectors and countries.'

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-3059025/Audi-creates-DIESEL-air-water-fuel-future-powering-car-driven-German-minister.html
Water is heated to form steam, which is broken down into hydrogen and oxygen using electrolysis. Hydrogen is pumped into a reactor with carbon dioxide at high pressure and high temperatures and causes them to react to produce liquid hydrocarbons, known as 'blue crude'. Hydrocarbons form the base of fossil fuels

Powerwall By Tesla
Powerwall is a home battery that charges using electricity generated from solar panels, or when utility rates are low, and powers your home in the evening. It also fortifies your home against power outages by providing a backup electricity supply. Automated, compact and simple to install, Powerwall offers independence from the utility grid and the security of an emergency backup.

Wind Technology - These fans can be placed on the front of the car in the front behind the grill of the car, as the car travels at high speeds the fans capture the air flow between the blades and use that energy from its spin to then send that energy to the battery.
With the help of Micro wind turbine are used to harvest wind energy readily available in the environment in the form of kinetic energy to power the low power electronic devices such as wireless sensor nodes. When air flows across the blades of the turbine, a net pressure difference is developed between the wind speeds above and below the blades. This will result in a lift force generated which in turn rotate the blades.

Geo Thermal Technology - This car will use the weathers solar heat energy to power itself, this will give it power from the heat of the sun and will charge its internals based on the thermal levels of its surroundings. So the hotter the day the more energy will be gathered from the heat.

goodyear-electric-tire

electricity-generating-tire

Energy Generating Tires - The tire will collect heat in multiple ways, primarily from the friction heat, but also the heat generated by tire flex. The most interesting thing about these tires is that they can still collect heat while not moving! Small patches on the tire’s thermo-piezoelectric layer can collect heat from the sun on a hot day.

Energy Generating Headlights

The Cars energy will be charged by the headlights and taillights by capturing energy from the sun and storing it in the battery pack for the car.

V-ray Online Course
I have recently just started my online course for V-ray Materials to learn to create real world materials in 3DS Max, by using the Render engine V-ray 3.0. I have just completed the first lesson which was the introductions to V-ray material and settings to reduce render times by tweaking the settings for the engine. This was done while keeping the look of the final render high in quality.

What ill be covering in this course is :

Description

Learn how to effectively optimize your scenes using laws and workflows that have been developed as a result of my deep understanding of how V-Rays core works.
In this lesson you will utilize V-Rays render element system to gain back control over the way V-Ray is sampling your scenes in order to reduce your render times dramatically.

Project "Tera"
After gathering the research I needed for the car and the latest technologies, I have came to a conclusion that I will want to call this car "Tera".

This is because Terraforming is the theoretical process of deliberately modifying its atmosphere, temperature, surface topography or ecology to be similar to the biosphere of Earth to make it habitable by Earth-like life.

So having the word "Tera" in the name will suggest that its to do with all those elements that terraforming changes, but instead of Terraforming its involving all of those modifiers for planets and using them to its own advantage to be a self sufficient car.

Blue Print
I have just finished tracing the car, and making my own blue print guidelines to be placed into 3DS max so I can model the car, this is the first time I'm modelling the blue prints myself as there are no blue prints available online anywhere.

I have gotten the real world images and made the lines using the pen tool in Photoshop. As you can see below I had to get the Front, Back, Side and Top view of the car and all of them had to be relatively the same dimensions.

Why is started with the car model of the Lykan is because I want it inspired by the previous model of the car. I can then later if needed add the details of the next model easier and modify it as I see fit, this way it will truly be inspired by its over all look and design.

I plan to make sketches of the new parts of the car such as a spoiler and how the technology can be integrated after modelling the car I am able to add them onto it with 3DS max. I want the cars aesthetics to be inspired by other cars also, so I'm thinking of remodelling some of the features of other cars to be integrated into the car, this will give it the unique feel and the features of the best cars.

I went over these images with the pen tool in Photoshop to get the outlines for me to work better with when I place them into 3DS max as a guide for dimensions and more.

These will be used for the actual modelling, I will split these into the corresponding view ports for 3DS max so when I switch to the top view I can see the top of the car and vice versa for the rest as I model the car.

These is just for demonstration purposes, and for the ad campaign I thought I would have a blue print design to make it look more of a blue print and actual schematic of the car with its features.

V-ray Renders
The level of detail I want achieve by the end of the project is to a close to real as I can, these renders below of various scenes and elements show what I would like to achieve.

Info-graphic
I would like to make a info-graphic if not have part of the boards for the end of year show to be one partly to show the technology that goes into the car to make it unique, maybe a blue print style one or something simplistic. I have been looking at various info graphics and some have caught my attention that i would like to incorporate the style into my own.

Description

Lesson 2 reveals my method for creating complex BRDFs by utilising V-Rays Blend material to its extreme.
You will finally understand how real world materials are behaving as I break down both the theoretical and practical sides of the shader creation process.

With the help of Lesson two of this on going online course, I was able to find out how to make basic materials for certain types of elements, so for example in this tutorial I was using a website called:

With the help of this site I was able to use real world data of refractive properties of certain materials such as Metals and use a graph which showed the angle of incidence, to get the right reflective properties of the material.

I use the green line ( non-polarized ) in 3Ds max to setup the Fresnel of the material I am creating in the material editor. The data above is for the Aluminium metal.

In the 3ds max material editor I was able to use the data from the website. So I made the same line as in the graph for the line graph in the material editor to give it the same reflective properties as the real world counter part.

With the help of the of the website I was able to create the materials exactly how they are in the real world. To achieve the material properties for the colored metals such as gold and copper I needed to use the spectrum in light pass specify for the RGB colours.

On the website I can change the reflective wavelength calculator to match that of a certain wavelength of a color, so if I wanted to see the graph for how gold passes through in the red wave length. I go to Wikipedia to then find out the wave length for the red color spectrum.

As you can see the wavelength for red is in-between the range of 620 - 740, so in the website I will put the average which is 680, but on the website it works in decimals so I put 0.68.

The graph is then updated for that colour spectrum

This time I change the material editors input from Mono to RGB, meaning to work with 3 colors instead of gray scale light passes. so with each of the options of the color spectrum I will need three lines for the graph, each are color coded as red, green and blue too.

But when all three are combined as the light passes and reflects off the material it gives it the color it needs and in this case gold was created.

As you a can see, the levels for the red, green and blue all start from the relatively same position. The colors in the middle are off slightly to create the gold color for the metal overall. But at the end of the graph they all end at the same point of effectiveness as they blend together to create the final color.

Car Ad Campaign Posters

Ideas

1. The first Idea I have for the advert is to have the car in the center of a city scene, and everything below it will be made of grass and within a nature theme.

The car will be In a center of a junction, there will be no other cars on the road and it will be either midday to evening times. The city scene will be darker and gloomier then the car itself, this will set the tone of the whole scene to show that the car is a more brighter and eye catching part of the advert.

The grass underneath will be of a similar effect to the car also, as it will be under the car but will leave the audience showing that the car is brighter, nicer and overall better to look at then the city background. the grass is to show that wherever the car is the grass will grow and since those two elements of the advert are of a brighter color that is a good thing.

2.Similar style to the first idea, but instead of placing the car on a junction, it is to be placed on a bridge facing away from the audience, this is because it is heading to the city, why i want it to face away. The effects of the grass transforming the concrete will be behind the car. This is because i want to show the change is happening after the wheels have touched parts of the road.

3. The third idea is with the car at a stand still in a middle of the field, the angle is front facing with a slight angle to show a it of the side of the car, it will have long but trimmed grass underneath, with some mountains and some tree's possibly. I might make it even more minimalist by showing only the car tire and part of the rim on the grass, enough to show the color of the brake calipers since those will be green and iconic for the car.

4.The fourth and final idea is for the car to be viewed upon a side angle, going down a straight road, all the audience is seeing is the car at a side angle and its a medium shot to show the whole car as well as some of the background. Which will be a city once again but with multiple buildings. Whatever is in front of the car is the buildings ,road, lights and lamp posts. But whatever is behind is turning into a green field, grass, trees and mountains in the distance. this will be in a blanket style like a page turning in a book.

Modelling the car

To Model the car which I have done a project for before I use the side, front, top and back views of the car, so I can see properly the proportions and how to make the look of the car exactly how it is in the real world. I create flat planes to then be references, for the car modelling process and begin work.

Here you can see I have modelled the first part of the chassis of the car, this is without the interior headlights and details.

Here is the finished model of the car, with all of its details created and done, next step is to create the colour scheme and the materials for the car to make it close to realism.

Ideas for the color scheme of the car as follows
The places circles in green will be of a green color, this is because i want it to represent Eco and earth and to make it clear use the colors that best represent it, i wan the base color to be white, as its best for contrast and works best with the green color.

First renders of the car are to see how the render will look on a outside environment using a HDRI map as well as a background of some sort, From this render I can see it works best, and am quite happy with the results from the render preview and can go ahead to set up the location for the studio.

In my previous personal project I had created a Chevrolet Camaro, which was placed in a soft studio with no distinctive background only soft light. So instead I wanted it to be a circular room with a marble floor and pillars as a sign of class and elegance for the car. I wanted to see how the lights would bounce and interact with the car so I placed a total of 21 lights in the room, all varied in size, intensity and shape.

The Studio was looking great, just needed the background outside the glass structure to be perfect for my vision, since i was inspired to create this car from watching Fast and Furious 7, I wanted the background to be a city skyline background. As if the car is in a studio in a tower high up, just like in the movie.

What I learned from this Project

  • HDRI Maps and how to use them
  • Light Maps
  • Environment Mapping
  • Realistic Basic Car Materials (Metal, Chrome, Paint, Marble, Plastic)
  • Optimization of the Render Engine V-ray to save time as well as keep quality high
  • Faster tips for 3DS max to model objects
  • Possible technology that can be implemented into cars to make them gather energy

How i could of improved it
If i had more time i would have liked to add much more detail to the interior of the car, i have never made interior car instruments and would like to have gave it a go.

I would have liked to create the technology visually there for the car instead of it hidden, the reason why i didn't was being time management was too short, i needed much more time to model these things it would not have been created in time i had chose to model them.
