End Of Year Project 2016 - Divine Epidemic

My project is to give the diseases and negative impacts they have on the world a symbolic and physical look/feel to them using 3D elements to create an abstract and appealing look. Yet they will be of diseases and will be something of blame, I am doing this, as right now diseases have no face they are invisible yet affect many of us on a daily basis. This will give people something to blame, a face if you will, instead of just text on paper. I will be using characteristics of the diseases to base the designs off and justify them.

I hope to answer challenges such as the design and development of the elements that will be needed to be created for this project. They will need to have some attribute and look to them to resemble the disease in one way or more. This will be a challenge and its working with traits of the disease and coming up with characteristics of the look of the diseases in this manner. Another challenge would be able to create a video depending on the approach taken to create the elements.

My Personal learning objects would be to use new modelling and camera techniques to create the look and feel of the diseases. They would need to be unique and have their own type of characteristics, but having a variety of diseases, I would be using many techniques and tools in 3Ds max and combination of programs to create the final piece of work. I will be using a combination of 3DS max, After Effects and Photoshop to finalize the pieces to create the look of the diseases. These programs will each have a part in the pieces to create elements such As particles, strands, materials and more.

Inspirations of elements and design in 3D -

As you can see from these abstract designs a lot of creativity and imagination can be added to each of them to make them seem appealing without giving away what they are exactly.

This consists of a lot of elements to make it visually appealing and interesting to look at, with the help of the camera settings to create a depth of field in the 3D program.

This is incorporating into it a physical human structure and element, this makes it show that it is on the human, idea for my elements to be latched onto the human element like this may help get the point of the disease across.

Once again these elements are not clear, but they have been created in such a way to make them appealing to look at. I will need to do a similar feel for the disease and then have the name of the diseases in the composition somewhere with a description for some education of the diseases. They are created with colours, elements and cameras in the program to make them seem microscopic too which helps give the feel of the abstract and point across they are microscopic not big.

These 3D element sculptures will be used for modeling and inspiration for my own models, they have both solid and fragmented elements to each one which adds a unique touch to the overall look of the shape. The use of colour will also an effect to the look of the element. These elements have different and unqiue shapes. They are random but they seem to work even though this is the case.

As you can see from above in these images they use an element of glow and layers to the object to add extra depth to the  element. The glow is subtle but enough to make the element more lively. I can use Liquid simulation and 3DS max to create the effect and the bubble would be a sphere wit ha glass material to make the shiny glass effect.

I can add the glow effect in 3DS max, the material above would be solid with a hollow center, with some refractive properties to let the glow through. while the glow inside would be a shape inside with some glow properties.

Real world organism inspirations and elements -

I would like to take real world elements and take them into the 3D world for inspired recreation with a exaggerated look to draw in the users and keep their attention. I like the look of the crystals.

Diseases to represent the World Health organisation

Malaria - spread through mosquito.

Zika - spread through water.

Ebola Virus - spread through contact.

Modeling Phase Punching holes to create the effect of one of the inspired work above. you can see that i have tested out the holes however the look of them is still too structured and will need to break it up more.

i have made it smoother while still sculpting it and adjusting the shape overall.

I then pushed and pulled it more to give it a more organic feel while still keeping the shape of the disease.

The next step is to recreate this again but this time break it up more, make it so that the chunks are less structured while still keeping its abstract form. instead of holes it would be less obvious for it.

This method would work for organic shares of no proper deformation but i need there to be more definition and randomness which i cannot get from this program as well as make a texture for the model. This takes too long to get the shape right and if a mistake is made down the line its hard to go back.

This is why it would be best to stick in 3DS max for the shapes as i can use modifiers and one program to deform as well as add the texture and lighting. Instead of multiple which can cause problems.

Testing

Z-depth - Z-depth allows to give the effect of perception and immersion a certain piece needs to make it come alive. its a small change yet it makes all the difference for the piece to have the depth it needs.

No Z-depth

Z-Depth Added

Texturing -  With the help of texturing i am able to have the needed details on a smooth shape without having to add the actual detail onto the shape which will reduce the render time since its not working with actuating poly and deformation.

Real flow Implementation - Real flow can be used to add the liquid element to the design, this will allow it to have a more of a liquid feel to it without having it completely in liquid form.

Bubbles/Fragments - Bubbles and fragments will be generated with particle flow generator, this will allow the depth of field to be able to focus on the particles more closer to the camera an blur the ones that are further away.

Abstract shape - Abstract shapes will be created from simple primitives such as spheres, torus' and more. By having them start off as primitives they can then be modified and contorted to the shape needed. this allows me to then have the shape control that is needed.

Spline Testing -  Splines were created using the particles path as a guide, this gives me control over the end shape dependent on the particles and how they move through 3d space.

Flower Render/Glow Test - This test was not only to create a organic shape from a primitive but to add the glow effect over the top that would give it a feel of something more visually appealing.

Diseases Development

Ebola

Zika

This Disease is solely transmittable through liquid and fluids for the substance of the  abstract shape is mainly in water and liquid, thats why the shape has some liquid form to it. I wanted to give it an abstract feel that was inspired by the above inspiration at the top of this blog, using similar colors and real-flow to give it a liquid substances.
